Wireless networks are becoming more common not just because of their efficiency but also because of many types of wireless networks. There are two types of wireless networks most frequently seen in daily life: Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and Wireless Broadband Network (WAN).

Many computers use a WLAN within a small area.

It’s not possible to identify them because all computers on a WLAN share the same IP address.

On the other hand, a WAN connects several devices with different IP addresses.

They are usually found in more significant areas such as colleges, businesses, and institutions.

As described earlier, there are various types of wireless networks: WLANs and WANs.

Although they are similar in purpose, yet they have some differences too.

Both types of networks need to allow access from other devices besides the computers on the network.

To achieve this, each has its own set of protocols implemented to allow secure communication between the devices and the network.

The most fundamental part of any wireless network’s physical layer is the network adapter.

This device acts as the middle-man between the users and the wireless network’s hardware.

The network adapters have built-in protocols to receive data requests from the wireless network’s devices.

The protocols determine how the devices will cooperate to establish a connection to the users.

Usually, the transmitted signals are in the form of infrared or Bluetooth signals.

These radio waves can travel a substantial distance before losing their strength.

As a result, they have to be kept at a state-of-the-art temperature to ensure their efficiency.

This requirement of a state of the art equipment helps them work efficiently even under extreme temperatures.

When we talk about the types of radio waves used by wireless networks, we can divide them into two main groups: personal area networks and broadband.

For personal area networks, users can establish a connection to only a limited range of distance.

They can extend their range if there are sufficient base station access points.

Broadband uses high-frequency radio waves that can penetrate a considerable distance.

The types of communication use the same radio waves that are used for conventional telephony.

However, the process of transmission involves an entirely new set of protocols.

Instead of the devices making phone calls, they make use of applications that transmit data.

For instance, a mobile phone can dial a number using applications like MMS, like taking an action shot of a picture.

The types of a wireless networks are divided further into three major categories that enable devices to communicate.

They include an access point, bridge, and repeater.

Access point enables devices to connect to other wireless devices; it is usually an extra hardware device.

The bridge allows devices to exchange information between themselves; it is used to extend the functionality of primary devices.

Finally, a repeater enables devices to send signals to each other.

These types of a wireless networks are highly efficient and have brought a revolution in telecommunication.

Earlier, networks were made up of one or few radio waves.

However, now we have various types of waves that are used for communication.

A distance can be covered with a single transmission that would have taken several rods of wires several years ago.

There are different types of networks that facilitate file sharing, online gaming, and various web services.

File sharing enables devices to share documents, programs, and individual files with each other.

Online gaming lets you play online games on a computer network and access your email, chat, and perform other tasks.

Web services include chat rooms, instant messaging, and application development.

Different types of wireless networks have their advantages.

One of them is BPL, which is the backbone of the Indian telecom industry.

It provides fast connectivity to and from the rural and local urban areas.

A laptop with an installed Broadband Provider has all the facilities needed for Internet connectivity using a browser.

BPL enables easy transfer of voice, SMS, and multimedia messages.

Another advantage of a broadband modem is that it enables multiple phone numbers connected to a computer network.

This facility is also possible in wireless networking.
